Photo 14 - 1981 TOWERS VARSITY BASEBALL TEAM

This team was led in pitching by Abbie Woyce (#2), Gerry Thomas (#23), and Allen Roberts (#16). The Dekalb News Sun newspaper nicknamed them “The Firm of Woyce, Thomas and Roberts.” All three would go on to pitch in college. Speedy outfielders Reginald Thompkins (#33), Mark Cowart (#19), John Gillette (#15), Richard Woyce (#1) and second baseman Mike Watkins (#14) cornered the market on stolen bases. Scott Keel (#12), Steve Evans (#34), Ken Vickery (#5), and Gary Jenkins (#35) were some of the most prolific hitters in Towers history. Jenkins is one of only a handful of sluggers to clear the 425-ft sign in right field. Evans used the power allies at Towers as his personal in-the-park home run playground. Vickery, who would later play at the Citadel, hit four home runs in a single game at Decatur High.

Here the team celebrates a home run. Pitcher Gerry Thomas (far left) and catcher Steve Evans (second from left) provided a powerful battery for this and other Towers teams during their highly successful careers at Towers. Another star was pitcher Abbie Woyce (4th from right) who compiled an ERA of 1.02 and struck out 104 batters in just 62-innings. He went on to earn a scholarship and pitch at Vanderbilt University.

TOURNAMENT NOTES:
Lost to Northside, 7-6
Defeated Marist, 8-5
Defeated Milton, 20-7
Tournament Champions

The team had seven home runs and 37-hits in 3-games. Tournament MVP Steve Evans had four hits, a homer and three scored runs to lead the attack against Milton. Evans led the Titans in hitting his sophomore (.388) and junior (.410) years, batted .426 as a senior with 5-home runs, 32-RBI, and 35-stolen bases in 37-attempts.

Highlights from the Milton game as reported by the Dekalb Extra newspaper: Allen Roberts was the winning pitcher with 9-strikeouts. Steve Evans went 1 for 3 and scored 3-runs. Mike Watkins had 3-RBI and scored 3-runs. Rich Woyce went 4 for 6. Ken Vickery went 3 for 6 with a double and a grand slam. He also scored 3-runs and stole 2-bases. Jim Loper went 3 for 4 with 3-runs scored. Mark Cowart went 2 for 4 with 2-RBI. Scott Keel had a homer, 5-RBI and scored 3-runs. Towers had 17 hits.

5AAA Region Champions

After suffering two losses to arch rival Clarkston High (led by Willie Lummus and Mark Clark) during the regular season, the 1982 Titans put on a clinic in the region tournament. Pitchers Gerry Thomas, Greg Abbott and George Cimadevilla dismantled opposing offenses while Ken Vickery, Scott Keel, Steve Evans, Richard Woyce, Reginald Thompkins, Mike Watkins and Jimmy McKamey sparked an explosive offense. This championship team (led by coaches Loper, Towers ‘77 and Medwick) would become a benchmark for success of future teams.
