Photo 1 - 1972 MIDWAY CONTINENTAL LEAGUE CARDINALS (7-8 year olds)

This team placed first in Continental League play and was led by pitcher Gerry Thomas (2nd row, 3rd from right, Towers ’82) and catcher Tommy Kimball. John McLendon, Class of 81, is in the 2nd row, first one on right.

Photo 2 - 1973 MIDWAY CONTINENTAL LEAGUE CUBS (7-8 year olds)

This team was led by Neal O’Brien (2nd row, 3rd from left, Avondale ‘82) who would later star on two state champion teams in the 13-14 year old league at Midway.

This team was led by hard throwing pitchers Todd Mitchell (standing, 3rd from left) and Terry Bass (kneeling, far right, Avondale ’82).

This team was led by catcher Ken Vickery, who would go on to re-write the record books at Towers High and play second base for the Citadel.

Photo 5 - 1975 MIDWAY AA LEAGUE CARDINALS (9-10 year olds)

Opening day was an exciting tradition at Midway during the 1970’s. Typically, all the teams would gather on one of the fields for team photos, followed by a “Dime-a-dip” picnic.

Photo 6 - 1976 MIDWAY MAJOR LEAGUE CARDINALS (11-12 year olds)

This team was sparked by pitcher Mark Clark (standing, 2nd from left, Clarkston ’82) and catcher Steve Evans (kneeling, far left, Towers ’82). The two would lead their respective high schools in a classic rivalry that spanned from 1977-1982.

Photo 8 - 1978 MIDWAY PONY LEAGUE BRAVES (13-14 year olds)

This team was led by pitcher Gerry Thomas (Towers ’82) and outfielder David Burgess (Avondale ’81). By 1978, Thomas had developed a fastball with pinpoint accuracy and a tantalizing curve that keep hitters off balance. Both players went on to lead their high school teams and play in college.

Georgia State Champions

First Row: David Willoughby, Dude Dallas, Tom Bailey, Jeff Miller (Towers ’82), and Neal O’Brien (Avondale ’82)

Middle Row: Alan Gordy (Redan ’82), Dean Fulcher (Towers ’83), John Gillette (Towers ’82), and Todd Burton

Third Row: Coach Gordy, Jim Loper (Towers ’82), Terry Bass (Avondale ’82), Coach O’Brien, Ken Vickery (Towers ’82), Daryl Palmer (Avondale ’82), Coach Bailey

Pitchers Gordy (Redan ’82) and Bass (Avondale ’82) led a blistering attack through the state tournament held in Rome, GA. The SS/2B combination of Ken Vickery and Tom Bailey solidified a stingy defense. Miller, O’Brien, Palmer, Fulcher and Burton provided the spark for an explosive offense.
